Man Convicted of Shooting Erin Police Officer and Sparking Manhunt

ERIN, Tenn. (WKRN) — Nearly 19 months after a man allegedly shot a member of the Erin Police Department, a jury has convicted him of all charges related to the incident. The shooting occurred during a traffic stop along Highway 149 near Substation Loop on June 27, 2022. The suspect, identified as then-32-year-old BJ Brown, pulled out a gun and shot Erin Police Officer Darrel Tiebor. Brown fled from law enforcement, leading to an extensive manhunt in the area.

According to Houston County Sheriff Kevin Sugg, the shooting initially began as a routine traffic stop. However, it quickly turned violent when Brown opened fire on Officer Tiebor. The officer sustained serious injuries but managed to call for backup before Brown fled the scene. This incident sparked a massive manhunt, with law enforcement agencies working tirelessly to locate and apprehend the suspect.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) issued a Blue Alert for Brown on June 28, 2022, informing people across the state that he was wanted for the attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer in Erin. The alert served as a warning to the public to remain vigilant and report any sightings or information related to Brown’s whereabouts.

Meanwhile, Louisiana police reported that Brown was also wanted for second-degree murder. He was accused of killing a woman in downtown New Orleans on the same day he shot Officer Tiebor. This revelation further intensified the manhunt and increased the urgency to capture Brown.

After an exhaustive search, law enforcement officials located Brown on June 29, 2022, near Clay Tomlinson Road, which was less than three miles away from the initial incident location. Officers from multiple agencies coordinated their efforts and surrounded Brown in a heavily-wooded area north of Highway 13. The containment operation ensured that Brown could not escape and posed no further threat to the public.

Following his capture, Brown appeared in court on July 1, 2022. During the hearing, his bail was set at $5 million. The high bail amount reflects the seriousness of the charges he faced and the potential danger he posed to the community. Brown was found to be indigent, and a public defender was appointed to represent him. He waived his right to a preliminary hearing within 14 days, and his next court appearance was scheduled for August 2, 2022.

Officer Tiebor, a military veteran, has since been recovering at home and is doing well, according to the Erin Police Department. The community rallied around him during his rehabilitation, showing their support for his bravery and dedication to protecting the town.

After more than a year of legal proceedings, a jury reached a verdict on Thursday, January 25. Brown was found guilty of attempted first-degree murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, and unlawful possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The sentencing is scheduled for March 26, where Brown will face the consequences of his actions.

This conviction brings closure to a traumatic event that shook the Erin community and highlights the dedication and perseverance of law enforcement in ensuring justice for their fellow officer. The successful resolution of this case serves as a reminder of the importance of swift action and collaboration in apprehending dangerous criminals and maintaining public safety.
