Joliet Murder Suspect’s Girlfriend Arrested and Charged with Obstructing Justice

JOLIET, Ill. (WLS) — In a shocking development, the girlfriend of a murder suspect from the Joliet area has been arrested and charged with obstructing justice. 21-year-old Kyleigh Cleveland-Singleton is due to appear in court on Thursday morning.

The Joliet police stated that Cleveland-Singleton made statements in an attempt to prevent the arrest of her boyfriend, Romeo Nance, before he was found dead in Texas.

Cleveland-Singleton, who is also the mother of Nance’s 3-year-old child, has been taken into custody and is currently held at the Will County Jail.

The investigation began when the police were searching for Nance’s son on Monday following the shooting incidents. Detectives received information that the child might be with his mother and grandmother at a residence in Plainfield. Upon arriving at the location, the police discovered the child along with Cleveland-Singleton.

Although Cleveland-Singleton cooperated with the police during questioning, detectives suspect that she purposely made statements to hinder Nance’s apprehension and obstruct the investigation.

The Joliet community has been shaken by the string of shootings allegedly committed by Nance. He is accused of shooting nine people, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals. Nance ultimately took his own life during a confrontation with Texas police on Monday night.

Joliet police have identified two of the shootings, which occurred on Davis Street and Pheasant Run Lane, as appearing to be more random in nature compared to the other two incidents where Nance specifically targeted multiple relatives.

On Wednesday, Joliet police released additional information about the victims. The deceased include Nance’s mother, brother, three sisters, aunt, and uncle.

  • Tameka Nance, aged 47, was the suspect’s mother.
  • Christine Esters, aged 38, was the suspect’s aunt.
  • William Esters II, aged 35, was the suspect’s uncle.
  • Joshua Nance, aged 31, was the suspect’s brother.
  • Alexandria Nance, aged 20, was the suspect’s sister.
