Police Search for Escaped Inmate in University City

Philadelphia police are currently on the lookout for a 17-year-old escaped inmate in the University City section. The inmate, identified as Shane Pryor, was being held on charges of murder, conspiracy, and firearms offenses, according to court records.

Pryor, who had been in custody since the age of 14, was being held for a murder that occurred in 2020. However, he managed to escape from the emergency room parking lot at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia on Wednesday.

It is reported that Pryor injured his hand while inside the juvenile justice center, and two staffers were escorting him to the hospital when he fled. The exact circumstances of his escape remain unclear, as he was not handcuffed at the time.

Authorities have disclosed that Pryor was last seen heading from the area of 34th and Spruce streets towards University Avenue and Civic Center Boulevard. He was described as wearing a blue sweatshirt, blue sweatpants, socks, and slides, although it is possible that he may have discarded the sweatshirt since then.

Standing at 5’7″ tall and weighing 180 pounds, Pryor is considered to be dangerous, and the public is urged to exercise caution. If anyone has any information regarding his whereabouts, they are advised to contact 911 immediately.

Investigation and Search Efforts

Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore stated that video footage showed Pryor entering and exiting several buildings in the area, indicating that he was actively trying to leave the vicinity. Police have been searching the surrounding buildings and utilizing canines to comb through large multi-level parking garages.

While no lockdowns have been imposed, officers are also checking the homes of Pryor’s relatives in other parts of the city, as part of their ongoing search efforts.

Defense Attorney’s Perspective

Defense attorney Paul DiMaio revealed that his client has consistently maintained his innocence, even during his initial statement to the police. DiMaio mentioned that a previous attempt to have the case moved to juvenile court was denied in December, which could have influenced Pryor’s decision to flee.

DiMaio speculated that Pryor may have felt that he would not receive a fair trial, leading to his desperate escape.

Conclusion

As the search for Shane Pryor continues, Philadelphia police are working diligently to locate and apprehend the escaped inmate. The public is urged to stay vigilant and report any information that may assist in his capture.

(Note: While initial reports mentioned other serious offenses, the police have confirmed only the charges of murder, conspiracy, and weapons possession.)
