19-Year-Old NEET Aspirant Commits Suicide in Kota Hostel

New Delhi, India – In a tragic incident, a 19-year-old NEET aspirant from Uttar Pradesh was found dead in his hostel room in Kota, Rajasthan. The incident occurred on Tuesday and marks the first suspected student suicide in the coaching hub this year. The victim’s body was discovered hanging from a ceiling fan in his room.

It has been reported that the ceiling fan in the room did not have an anti-suicide device, which is a violation of the guidelines set for hostels in the district. Naveen Mittal, the president of the Kota Hostel Association, expressed his concern over the incident and stated that the association will blacklist the hostel and recommend the district administration to take appropriate action. Mittal further highlighted that there are still several hostels in the city that are not following the guidelines.

Kota, known as the coaching hub, attracts lakhs of students from across the country every year for the preparation of medical and engineering entrance exams. However, the city has also gained notoriety for the high number of student suicide deaths. In 2023 alone, Kota witnessed 26 student suicide deaths, the highest number recorded so far.

Authorities in Kota had previously ordered hostels to install spring devices on ceiling fans to prevent suicide attempts. However, it seems that some hostels are still not complying with the guidelines, leading to tragic incidents like this one.

The deceased has been identified as Mohammed Jaid, a 19-year-old resident of Moradabad district in Uttar Pradesh. Jaid was preparing for his second attempt at NEET at a coaching institute in Kota. The police were alerted by the hostel warden when Jaid did not leave his room by Tuesday evening.

No suicide note was found in the room, and the reason behind this tragic incident is yet to be determined. The postmortem of the body will be carried out once the victim’s parents arrive in the city.

This incident highlights the need for stricter enforcement of safety guidelines in hostels and better mental health support for students in coaching hubs like Kota. It is essential to create an environment that promotes well-being and provides necessary resources for students facing academic pressure and stress.

Efforts should be made to raise awareness about mental health issues among students and ensure that they have access to counseling services. Additionally, hostels and coaching institutes must prioritize the safety and well-being of their students by implementing adequate safety measures and providing support systems.

It is hoped that this tragic incident serves as a wake-up call for authorities and prompts them to take immediate action to prevent such incidents in the future. Every student’s life is precious, and it is the responsibility of the education system and society as a whole to protect and nurture their well-being.
