According to the Matthews Police Department, the incident unfolded when the security alarm at the Auto Finance Center on Independence Boulevard went off at 3:13 a.m. on January 1. Officers swiftly initiated a traffic stop, but the suspect chose to flee at a high rate of speed. After a brief chase, the officers located the stolen vehicle abandoned in a nearby parking lot. It was determined that the vehicle had been recently stolen from the Auto Finance Center.

Further investigation led the officers to the suspect’s residence, where they apprehended and identified a 14-year-old juvenile as the prime suspect in the case.

The suspect has been formally referred to the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and faces a total of 11 charges, including four counts of motor vehicle theft, two counts of breaking or entering a building, one count of attempted breaking or entering a building, one count of theft of an auto part, one count of possession of a stolen motor vehicle, one count of fleeing to elude arrest, and one count of resisting, delaying, and/or obstructing an officer.
