Man Suspected of Killing Eight People in Suburban Chicago Found Dead

CHICAGO (AP) — Authorities have revealed that a 23-year-old man, Romeo Nance, who was suspected of shooting and killing eight people in suburban Chicago this weekend, was related to most of the victims. The tragic incident ended when Nance fatally shot himself during a confrontation with law enforcement in Texas.

Clearer Timeline Emerges

The Illinois authorities provided a clearer timeline of the shootings on Tuesday, stating that they believe all eight people killed and the ninth person wounded were shot on Sunday. Nance then fled the area by Sunday evening. However, law enforcement officials have yet to determine a motive for the killings.

Joliet Police Chief Bill Evans told reporters, “We can’t get inside his head. We just don’t have any clue as to why he did what he did.”

Details of the Shootings

Investigators believe that Nance first shot seven people at two relatives’ homes in the city of Joliet on Sunday. He then randomly fired shots at two men, one outside an apartment building and another on a residential street, according to Joliet and Will County officials.

The exact relationships between Nance and the victims have not yet been determined by the police.

The victims found at the Joliet homes were identified by the Will County coroner as 38-year-old Christine Esters, 47-year-old Tamaeka Nance, 35-year-old William Esters II, 31-year-old Joshua Nance, and 20-year-old Alexandria Nance. The names of two teenage girls, aged 14 and 16, have not been released.

Authorities previously identified the man killed outside the apartment building as Toyosi Bakare, a 28-year-old man from Nigeria who had been living in the U.S. for about three years.

Manhunt Ends in Texas

Nance was found dead on Monday evening after U.S. Marshals located him near Natalia, Texas, which is approximately 30 miles southwest of San Antonio and over 1,000 miles from Joliet. Illinois authorities confirmed on Tuesday that Nance had no known ties to Texas.

The Medina County, Texas, Sheriff Randy Brown stated that his office received a call on Monday about a person suspected in the Chicago-area killings heading into the county on Interstate 35. Brown believes that the suspect was attempting to reach Mexico.

Officers from multiple agencies confronted Nance, and the Texas Rangers are currently investigating his death. Lieutenant Jason Reyes, a spokesperson for the Texas Department of Public Safety, stated that the Rangers believe Nance shot himself. Further details about the circumstances of Nance’s death have not been disclosed.

Fourth Mass Killing in the U.S. this Year

The Illinois shootings mark the fourth mass killing in the United States this year, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University. The database defines a mass killing as an attack in which four or more people, excluding the perpetrator, have died within a 24-hour period.

With no evidence of a motive and the tragic loss of eight lives, this incident has shocked and devastated the community of Joliet. Law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the case, hoping to find answers and bring closure to the families affected by this senseless act of violence.
