Police: Husband arrested in Costa Rica in connection to wife’s death after more than 30 years on the run

A man wanted in connection with the 1991 killing of his wife has been extradited from Costa Rica earlier this month, putting an end to his more than three decades on the run, officials announced in a news conference on Monday. Jose Lazaro Cruz, who was arrested in Costa Rica in 2022, has been brought back to Fairfax County, Virginia to face trial in the 32-year-old murder case, according to the police. It is currently unclear whether Lazaro Cruz has an attorney representing him. CNN has reached out to the Commonwealth Attorney for Fairfax County and the Fairfax County Public Defender Office for information regarding his legal representation.

On April 30, 1991, the Fairfax County police officers responded to a call of a stabbing incident and discovered the lifeless body of Ana Jurado, 24, in the street. She had suffered trauma to her upper body, as stated by Eli Cory, the deputy chief of investigation in Fairfax County. Lazaro Cruz, who was Jurado’s estranged husband at the time, was identified as the alleged killer by the police, but he managed to escape. Initially, Lazaro Cruz attempted to enter Canada but was denied entry due to the use of falsified documentation. Border agents noticed a “fresh cut” on his hand during the encounter. Desperate to evade authorities, Lazaro Cruz traveled to Houston, Texas, and is believed to have used a smuggler to leave the country, eventually finding refuge in El Salvador, according to Cory.

At that time, El Salvador lacked the mechanisms or policies to extradite individuals to the United States. However, the country later amended its constitution in 2000, enabling the extradition of Salvadoran nationals. Jurado, the victim, was the mother of three young children. Her 3-year-old and 7-month-old daughters resided in the U.S., while her 4-year-old son lived in El Salvador at the time of her tragic death. Despite the passage of time, Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis emphasized that this case is not a “traditional cold case” since Lazaro Cruz was identified as a suspect immediately; he was merely on the run from the law.

On July 29, 2022, Lazaro Cruz was apprehended while attempting to enter Costa Rica, according to Cory. Lazaro Cruz, who had remarried and started a new life in El Salvador since the 1991 killing, now faces trial and is currently being held in the Fairfax County Correctional Center.
