Tragic Accident in Brick Claims Life of Health and Wellness Entrepreneur

BRICK, NJ — A devastating incident occurred on January 13 in Brick, New Jersey, when a South Amboy teenage boy hit and fatally injured a 56-year-old woman. The victim has been identified as Julia Sutton, a health and wellness entrepreneur.

The suspect responsible for the accident is Mark Carey Jr., a 19-year-old from South Amboy. Allegedly, Carey struck Sutton with his 1999 Ford Explorer while she was on Rt. 35 and then fled the scene. The incident took place around 9 a.m. on a Saturday morning.

Julia Sutton, a resident of Weehawken, was married and had four children according to her obituary on Dignity Memorial.

The fatal car accident took place on Rt. 35 south, near Bay Boulevard in Brick Township. Ocean County Prosecutor Brad Billhimer confirmed that Sutton was struck and killed while she was on the shoulder of Rt. 35. The reason for her presence on the busy highway remains unclear.

After the accident, Sutton was rushed to Ocean University Medical Center where she was tragically pronounced dead.

The driver of the car, Mark Carey Jr., fled the scene. However, the vehicle was identified as a 1999 Ford Explorer registered to Carey. He was apprehended the following day, Sunday, at his parents’ home in South Amboy. Carey now faces multiple charges, including knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in the death of another, failing to report an accident, reckless driving, careless driving, and failure to maintain lane of travel.

Julia Sutton was a renowned fitness entrepreneur and co-founder of Exhale, a prominent wellbeing brand based in New York City. Her biography on the Boutique Fitness Solutions website, which offers mentorship for aspiring entrepreneurs, highlights her accomplishments. Sutton served as the chief growth officer for Vitruvia and completed the OPM program at Harvard Business School. She was also an esteemed member of the COO network, American College of Sports Medicine, and HBS Club of New York. At the time of her tragic passing, she was actively involved in the Manhattan College O’Malley School of Business Advisory Board.

Meanwhile, Mark Carey Jr. remains in custody at the Ocean County Jail in Toms River until his detention hearing.
