Accident – Death – Obituary News : JOLIET, Ill. — Authorities in Joliet and Will County have released a detailed timeline and new information regarding what they are calling the most heinous crime the city has ever seen. On Sunday evening, eight people were found dead and one person was shot. Joliet Police Department Chief Bill Evans has confirmed that the multi-victim homicide, which claimed the lives of seven individuals, occurred on Sunday afternoon. When authorities arrived on Monday, the scene was no longer active. The suspect, 23-year-old Romeo Nance, had fled the area and was believed to have left Will County and the City of Joliet.

Detectives worked swiftly to identify the suspect and notify the public. Dwayne English, public affairs sergeant at Joliet Police Department, described the crime as “arguably the most heinous” the city and police department have ever handled. The victims have been identified as 38-year-old Christine Esters, 31-year-old Joshua Nance, 20-year-old Alexandria Nance, and two unidentified teenage girls, aged 14 and 16. They were found dead from gunshot wounds at 2212 West Acres Road. At 2225 West Acres Road, two more victims were discovered, identified as 47-year-old Tamaeka Nance and 35-year-old William Esters II. Authorities have revealed that there was a family relationship between the two homes, but specific details have not been provided.

The crime spree began on Sunday afternoon, with the deaths of seven individuals at the homes in Joliet. Will County deputies were called to the Pheasant Run Apartments just before 4:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a critically injured man. The victim, 28-year-old Toyosi Bakare, had suffered a single gunshot wound to the head and was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Bakare, originally from Nigeria, had been living in the U.S. for about three years.

While securing the scene, authorities were alerted to another shooting on Davis Street in the City of Joliet. A 42-year-old man had been shot in the leg and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The victim provided details about the suspect’s vehicle, a red Toyota Camry. Joliet Police Department Chief Bill Evans has stated that the shootings involving Bakare and the injured victim do not appear to be connected to the deaths in Joliet. They seem to be random acts of violence.

The shootings on West Acres Road are believed to have occurred during the midday hours on Sunday, before the seemingly random shootings. By 8 p.m. on Sunday, authorities had determined that the red Camry was associated with Romeo Nance, who had an extensive criminal history. Patrols were conducted in areas Nance was known to frequent, but he was not located. Detectives set up surveillance in the 2200 block of West Acres, where Nance was known to stay in two homes, in the hope that he would return.

When deputies attempted to contact the residents at 2212 West Acres on Monday afternoon and received no response, they tried to reach the residents at 2225 West Acres, but again, no one answered. Blood and bullet holes were discovered on the front door of 2225 West Acres, and upon entering, two victims were found. Joliet police were called to the scene, and five more victims were discovered at 2212 West Acres.

A manhunt was initiated to locate Romeo Nance and the suspect vehicle. Law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Marshals Service, were involved in the search. On Monday evening, Nance was believed to be traveling in Texas, and his vehicle was located by a helicopter along Interstate 35. When authorities attempted to stop the vehicle, Nance fled on foot, armed with a gun. He was pursued, but ultimately died by suicide.

Authorities have acknowledged that there are many unanswered questions regarding this case, including the motives behind these senseless killings. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are limited at this time. The City of Joliet has been deeply impacted by this tragedy, and the community mourns the loss of the victims..
