27-Year-Old Hollister Man Arrested After Attempted Shooting in Gilroy

GILROY, Calif. – In a shocking incident that occurred on Saturday night, Gilroy Police apprehended a 27-year-old man from Hollister who allegedly attempted to shoot a victim during an altercation. The incident took place on the 9000 block of Kern Avenue.

According to investigators, officers quickly responded to the scene and found the victim unharmed by the gunfire. It was revealed that the suspect, identified as Joel Eduardo Valencia, was engaged in a physical altercation with the victim.
During the heated exchange, Valencia reportedly brandished a loaded 9 mm handgun and discharged multiple rounds in the direction of the victim, all while several small children were in close proximity.
After the incident, Valencia fled the scene in a black vehicle. However, a vigilant Gilroy Police Officer managed to track him down in the vicinity of Mantelli Drive and Fuchsia Court.
An attempt to initiate a traffic stop was made by the officer, but Valencia refused to comply, leading to a vehicle pursuit. The pursuit was eventually terminated by the Gilroy Police, but not before Valencia crashed his car into a parked vehicle and a fire hydrant on First Street.
Authorities later discovered the handgun used in the shooting inside Valencia’s vehicle. Consequently, he was apprehended and subsequently booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on multiple charges related to the shooting and illegal possession of a firearm.
