Search Underway for Escaped Prisoner in Philadelphia’s University City

Pennsylvania authorities have launched a manhunt in Philadelphia’s University City section for an escaped prisoner. The fugitive, identified as 17-year-old Shane Pryor, was being held on charges of murder, conspiracy, and firearms offenses, according to court records.

Shane Pryor had been in custody since the age of 14, awaiting trial for a murder that occurred in 2020. However, he managed to escape from the emergency room parking lot at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia shortly before noon on Wednesday, as reported by our sister station, 6ABC Action News.

The teenager was being escorted by two prison staffers after sustaining a hand injury inside the juvenile justice center. Shockingly, he was not restrained when he fled, leaving authorities to question whether he managed to remove his restraints or if he had not been restrained at all.

Philadelphia police revealed that Pryor was last seen heading from the area of 34th and Spruce streets towards University Avenue and Civic Center Boulevard. He was wearing a blue sweatshirt, blue sweatpants, socks, and slides. It is possible that he may have discarded the sweatshirt by now.

Described as approximately 5’7″ tall and weighing 180 pounds, Shane Pryor presents a potential threat to the public. Surveillance footage shows him entering other medical buildings in University City, where he has been approaching individuals and requesting the use of their phones.
