Lynchburg Shooting Leaves Woman Hospitalized, Prompting Investigation

LYNCHBURG, Va. – A shooting incident in Lynchburg has resulted in a woman being hospitalized and has triggered an ongoing investigation by local authorities.

On January 24th at 8:43 p.m., the police responded to a report of a shooting incident on Polk Street. Upon their arrival, law enforcement officers discovered a woman with a gunshot wound to her leg, which fortunately was not life-threatening. The victim was immediately transported to Lynchburg General Hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment for her injuries.

According to the ongoing investigation, authorities have determined that the victim and the suspect were acquainted with each other and engaged in a verbal altercation, which ultimately escalated into the shooting incident.

The suspect involved in the shooting has been identified as 21-year-old David Garland III, a resident of Lynchburg. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that Garland has been arrested and is facing multiple charges including:

  • Malicious wounding
  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
  • Felony child endangerment
  • Reckless handling of a firearm
  • Discharging a firearm in the city limits
  • Trespassing
  • Shooting in an occupied dwelling

David Garland III is currently being held without bond in the Blue Ridge Regional Jail, as confirmed by the police.

Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among the three children who were present inside the residence during the shooting incident.

As a precautionary measure, R.S. Payne Elementary was placed on restricted entry and exit, while Dunbar Middle School initially went into a brief lockdown, which was later changed to restricted entry and exit during the course of the investigation.
