Mumbai, January 24 – Autopsies conducted on the carcasses of two tigers have revealed a shocking turn of events at Maharashtra’s Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve. It has been discovered that a tiger at the reserve has resorted to cannibalism. The carcasses, belonging to a six-year-old tiger known as T-142 and a two-year-old cub of tigress T-92, were found with the cub’s body partially eaten at the rear. Forest officials suspect that a male tiger named T-192 may be responsible for the killings.

It is believed that tiger T-192 killed the other two tigers during a territorial fight and subsequently fed on the flesh of the cub. The area where the carcasses were found witnessed fierce fights among tigers over a span of two days starting from January 22. Nandkishore Kale, Deputy Director (core) of the reserve, stated, “This seems to be a case of cannibalism, but further investigation is required to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

The suspicion towards tiger T-192 arises from the presence of the animal in camera trap images captured in the area where the carcasses were discovered. Forest officials have initiated a detailed investigation to confirm whether tiger T-192 is indeed responsible for the deaths of the other two tigers.

Cannibalism, defined as the act of consuming another individual of the same species as food, is a phenomenon observed in various animal species. According to Kishor Rithe, Director of Bombay Natural History Society, tigers targeting cubs not sired by them is not uncommon. However, the fact that tigers are feeding on these cubs is a matter that requires further study. Rithe further explained that such instances are more likely to occur in parks with high tiger density.
