The Death of Romeo Nance in Texas Ends Manhunt Following Chicago-area Shootings

The death of Romeo Nance, a 23-year-old individual, near the town of Natalia, Texas, approximately 35 miles (56 km) southwest of San Antonio, has brought an end to a manhunt that originated from the slaying of one man and the injury of another in two separate shootings in the Chicago area on Sunday, as reported by Reuters.

The search for a suspect involved in the gun violence incidents on Sunday led the authorities to uncover two more crime scenes on Monday in Joliet, Illinois, where seven members of a single family were tragically found shot to death in two neighboring houses. The city of Joliet, situated about 35 miles (56 km) southwest of Chicago, became the focal point of the investigation, with investigators suspecting that Nance had some acquaintance with the seven victims found slain in the two residences.

Expressing his dismay, Joliet Police Chief William Evans remarked, “I’ve been a policeman for 29 years. This is probably the worst crime scene I’ve ever been associated with,” a statement made approximately two hours before the suspect was located.

The Joliet Police Department received information on Monday night that US marshals had pinpointed Romeo Nance’s location in south-central Texas near Natalia, about 1,200 miles (1,930 km) away. It is believed that Nance, following a confrontation with Texas law enforcement officials, took his own life using a handgun.

Although no further details were provided, the circumstances and sequence of events surrounding the killings in Illinois remained unclear on Monday night.

Authorities disclosed that the first victim of the series of gun violence incidents was a 28-year-old immigrant from Nigeria, identified as a man found shot dead on Sunday afternoon in Joliet Township. The victim had been residing in the United States for approximately three years.

Deputies investigating the initial shooting subsequently conducted an overnight stakeout in search of Romeo Nance at his last known address in Joliet, as he was the registered owner of the suspected getaway vehicle. After discovering blood outside one of the two dwellings, officers gained entry into Nance’s residence and a second neighboring home. Shockingly, they discovered five individuals with fatal gunshot wounds in one house and two more victims inside the other, bringing the total death toll at the three homicide scenes to eight.

In an unrelated incident, a 42-year-old man was wounded in yet another “random” shooting in Joliet on Sunday. Although this individual was not connected to the other victims, the authorities identified a link between the incident and Nance’s vehicle.
