Chicago [US], January 23 (ANI): A man suspected of carrying out a shooting rampage in Joliet, a suburb of Chicago, has been found dead from self-inflicted gunshot wounds, according to authorities. The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Romeo Nance, is believed to have shot and killed at least seven people in two neighboring houses in West Acres road in Joliet, Illinois.

Authorities had earlier launched a manhunt for Nance, describing him as “dangerous.” US Marshals located him near Natalia, Texas, where it is believed that he took his own life following a confrontation with law enforcement officials. The motive behind the shootings remains unknown at this time.

The first victim, a 28-year-old Nigerian immigrant named Toyosi Bakare, was found shot in the head outdoors at an apartment complex in Joliet Township. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Bakare had been living in the Will County area for the past three years.

Prior to the discovery of Bakare’s body, Joliet Police officers had responded to a call on Davis Street, where they found a 42-year-old man who had been shot in the leg. The injured man was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities believe that Nance was responsible for both incidents.

The Joliet Police Department is currently conducting an active homicide investigation into the incidents. Multiple deceased individuals were found in two homes on West Acres Road. The victims have not yet been publicly identified, but authorities believe they are from the same family.

Joliet Police Chief Bill Evans described the crime scene as the worst he has ever encountered in his 29-year career. The killings are believed to be connected to two other shootings that occurred on Sunday.

Authorities had been surveilling the 2200 block of West Acres Road after Nance’s car, a red Toyota Camry, was spotted near the scene of both Sunday shootings. Deputies knocked on the door of one of the homes but received no response. Upon entering the second home, they discovered two more dead victims. Five additional victims were found in the first home, although it is unclear how long they had been deceased.

The Will County Sheriff’s Office, Joliet Police Department, and FBI’s Fugitive Task Force had been working together in their search for Nance. They had urged the public to provide any information that could lead to his capture.

The investigation into the Joliet shooting rampage is ongoing, as authorities try to piece together the events that led to this tragic incident..
