The initial incident that triggered the investigation occurred on Sunday when Will County deputies responded to a call at an apartment complex in Joliet. They discovered a man bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head, who later succumbed to his injuries. The victim has been identified as Toyosi Bakare, a 28-year-old Nigerian national who had been living in the United States for three years. Shortly before this incident, another shooting took place in the 200 Block of Davis Street, where a 42-year-old man was shot in the leg but survived with non-life-threatening injuries.

In a disturbing twist, court records and local news sources reveal that Nance has a prior criminal history. Approximately a year ago, he was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated assault, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and reckless discharge of a firearm. These charges stemmed from an incident where Nance allegedly attempted to shoot a woman multiple times on Ingalls Avenue and at a home in Joliet. Following a brief struggle with officers, Nance was apprehended near his home.

Despite being released on a $100,000 bond, Nance’s case has yet to go to trial. His attorney sought a further reduction of bond, which Will County prosecutors opposed. Ultimately, a judge denied the request for bond reduction. However, Nance has consistently appeared for subsequent court hearings related to his case.
