Man Suspected of Killing Eight Found Dead in Texas
A man believed to be responsible for the fatal shooting of eight individuals and the injury of another in suburban Chicago has been found dead in Texas, where he is believed to have taken his own life following an encounter with law enforcement. The 23-year-old suspect, Romeo Nance, was discovered near Natalia, Texas, approximately 35 miles southwest of San Antonio.
This development brings an end to an extensive manhunt that began with the killing of one man and the injuring of another in two separate shootings in the Chicago area on Sunday. As authorities pursued the suspect, the search led to the discovery of two additional crime scenes in Joliet, Illinois, where seven members of the same family were found shot to death in two houses situated across the street from each other.
Motive Remains Unknown
Although the motive behind the shootings remains unclear, investigators in Joliet suspect that Nance had a connection to the seven victims found deceased in the two dwellings. Joliet Police Chief William Evans, who has been in law enforcement for 29 years, described the crime scene as the most horrific he has ever encountered.
On Monday night, the Joliet Police Department received information that U.S. marshals had located Nance in south-central Texas, near Natalia, approximately 1,200 miles away from the crime scene. It is believed that Nance took his own life with a handgun following a confrontation with Texas law enforcement officials.
Despite this development, many details surrounding the killings in Illinois remain vague as of Monday night.
Series of Shootings Unfold
The initial shooting occurred on Sunday afternoon in Joliet Township, where a 28-year-old immigrant from Nigeria, who had been living in the U.S. for three years, was found dead from gunshot wounds. As authorities investigated this incident, they identified Nance as the registered owner of the suspected getaway vehicle and initiated a stakeout at his last known address in the nearby city of Joliet.
After gaining entry into Nance’s residence and a neighboring home, law enforcement officers discovered five individuals dead from gunshot wounds in one house and two in the other. The total death toll across the three homicide scenes reached eight. Additionally, a 42-year-old man was wounded in a separate “random” shooting in Joliet on Sunday, which authorities believe to be connected to Nance’s vehicle, although the victim had no other connection to the other victims.
Authorities have not released further details regarding the sequence of events leading up to the shootings or the circumstances surrounding the incidents.
