The Remains of Tammie Liles, Last Known Victim of Serial Killer Gary Ridgway, Finally Identified

The remains of the final unidentified victim of notorious serial killer Gary Ridgway have been positively identified in Washington State, more than four decades after her disappearance. The King County Sheriff’s Office announced on Monday that the remains belong to 16-year-old Tammie Liles from Everett, a city located just north of Seattle.

With this latest identification, there are now no other unidentified remains associated with the infamous Green River Case, as confirmed by the sheriff’s office.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Gary Ridgway specifically targeted vulnerable women and girls, including sex workers and runaways. He became the primary suspect in what became known as the Green River killings due to the initial discovery of victims near the Green River. Finally, in 2001, Ridgway was apprehended when investigators utilized DNA technology to match his 1987 saliva sample to several victims.

Tammie Liles was first reported missing in June 1983, and her body was later discovered in April 1985. Her remains were initially identified as belonging to a victim of the Green River Killer in 1988. In 2003, Ridgway led investigators to a second set of her remains. Recently, a new DNA profile was created in 2022, leading to a relative of Liles who confirmed the match.

Eric White, the spokesperson for the King County Sheriff’s Office, expressed immense satisfaction at finally being able to identify all of Gary Ridgway’s victims, a case that originated in the early 1980s. White told The Seattle Times, “All 49 of them.”

In 2003, Ridgway pleaded guilty to 49 slayings, including that of Tammie Liles, in order to avoid the death penalty. He is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla.
