Former Policeman Haibil Kiraman Wanted for Alleged Involvement in Major Drug Syndicate in Sabah

KUALA LUMPUR: In a significant development, a 48-year-old ex-policeman has emerged as one of the primary suspects among eight individuals wanted for their alleged participation in a major drug syndicate operating in Sabah. This revelation follows the charging of a Datuk, a policeman, and nine others from the same criminal organization at the Kota Kinabalu sessions court yesterday.

According to the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, the retired policeman in question has been identified as Haibil Kiraman, who officially retired from the police force on November 1, 2021. The last known sighting of Kiraman took place in Tawau, Sabah.

The remaining individuals sought in connection with the drug syndicate are Sahairul Sabudin and Absar Musa, both aged 38, as well as Filipinos Hasan Syamsuddin @ Nas Botak, Joel Edwin @ Dedek, Sing Harun Musa @ Thambi, and Mana Ungok @ Mike. An Indonesian woman named Rohani Yunus @ Karisa is also among the wanted suspects. Unfortunately, the ages of the foreign individuals are currently unknown.

During a media conference, Deputy Inspector-General Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay disclosed that the police have successfully frozen a total of 42 bank accounts, amounting to RM1.86 million, between December 27, 2023, and January 19, 2024. Additionally, the authorities have seized assets belonging to the syndicate that are valued at over RM9 million.

In a separate statement addressing the rise in police misconduct, Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay defended the police’s recruitment procedures. However, he emphasized the need for fine-tuning the selection process for supervisory roles.

“Our recruitment standard operating procedures are comprehensive. Many of those who were involved in criminal activities seemed to have conducted themselves impeccably during the recruitment process. Perhaps the allure of temptation was too great for them,” he stated. Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay further reiterated that the police force will not tolerate any form of compromise when it comes to officers involved in criminal activities.
