The first shooting occurred on Sunday, resulting in the death of a 28-year-old man and leaving another individual injured. The following day, police discovered seven more dead bodies in two homes on the 2200 block of West Acres Road. Joliet Police Chief Bill Evans described the crime scene as one of the worst he had ever witnessed.

A massive manhunt was launched to apprehend Nance, who was considered armed and dangerous. The search ended when he was located by US Marshals in Natalia, Texas, approximately 1,191 miles away from Joliet. However, before law enforcement officials could apprehend him, Nance took his own life with a handgun during a confrontation.

The journey from Joliet to Texas would have taken at least 19 hours by car, crossing through four states. The Will County Sheriff’s Office had been investigating Nance since Sunday when they responded to a report of a man bleeding from his head. The victim, identified as 28-year-old Toyosi Bakare, succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. Nance’s vehicle was connected to another non-fatal shooting in the area.

Authorities had set up surveillance at an address linked to Nance’s car on West Acres Road, which eventually led them to discover the crime scene. Five family members were found dead in one house, while two others were found dead in a neighboring residence.

Though a motive for the killings has not been established, Chief Evans confirmed that Nance was acquainted with the victims. The Joliet Police Department expressed their condolences to the families affected by this heinous crime and vowed to bring the perpetrator to justice.

Prior to this incident, Nance had a history of criminal activity. In 2023, he was arrested for allegedly attempting to shoot a woman multiple times. He was charged with various offenses, including aggravated discharge of a weapon and obstructing a peace officer. However, he was released on bond and was due to appear in court in February.

The news of Nance’s suicide has left the community in shock, and the investigation into the shootings continues. The police urge anyone with information about Nance or his vehicle, a red Toyota Camry with the license plate Q730412, to contact their local law enforcement agency. The details of this developing case may change, and authorities are actively working to uncover more information surrounding the motive behind these tragic events..
