Alabama Jail Escapee Arrested After Hiding in Trash Can in Atlanta Neighborhood, Police Say

Atlanta News First Staff

ATLANTA (WANF) – The Atlanta Police Department has released police video footage showing the desperate attempt of an Alabama jail escapee to evade capture by hiding in a trash can in a northeast Atlanta neighborhood.

The incident unfolded when Atlanta police received information about a stolen Infiniti Q50 in the vicinity of the 300 block of Boulevard NE on Wednesday, January 17, at around 3:37 p.m.

Acting swiftly, a police helicopter located the stolen vehicle parked in the lot of a Chevron gas station in the area. The suspect behind the wheel was identified as 22-year-old Tyree Chapman.

As officers and Georgia State Patrol troopers attempted to stop Chapman as he exited the gas station, he chose to flee, evading the authorities.

Undeterred, the police helicopter continued to track Chapman, leading officers to a convenience store located on the 300 block of Glenn Street. There, Chapman abandoned the stolen car and fled into an adjacent residential area.

Dramatic police helicopter footage captured Chapman’s frantic attempt to escape as he sprinted through the neighborhood. However, his desperate efforts to evade capture came to an end when he climbed inside a garbage can and shut the lid.

The subsequent bodycam footage from the arresting officers revealed their discovery of Chapman hidden inside the trash can and his subsequent arrest.

During the arrest, the police officers also uncovered a handgun that Chapman had attempted to conceal in another garbage can.

Following his arrest, Chapman admitted to the officers that he had escaped from the Bessemer City Jail in Alabama, providing them with crucial information.

Chapman now faces multiple charges, including driving with a suspended or revoked license, reckless driving, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and theft by receiving stolen property.

After being taken into custody, Chapman was transported to the Fulton County Jail, where he awaits extradition to the Bessemer City Jail.
