A tragic incident unfolded in Sumter County on Sunday night, resulting in the death of a woman after she was shot by a deputy, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO). The incident occurred at the Rails End Mobile Home Park at approximately 11:09 p.m. when SCSO deputies responded to a distress call made to 911. The woman, later identified as 81-year-old Janet Sours, claimed that “people were dying over here” and urgently requested rescue personnel to come to her residence.

Upon arriving at the scene, the deputies made contact with Janet Sours and initiated an investigation into her distress call. However, the situation took a violent turn when Sours unexpectedly pulled out a knife concealed behind her back and aggressively lunged at one of the deputies. Faced with this imminent threat, the deputy swiftly stepped backward, drew his weapon, and fired at Sours in self-defense.

Following the shooting, rescue personnel immediately provided lifesaving measures on-site. Despite their efforts, Janet Sours tragically succumbed to her injuries while being transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center.
