University of Illinois Police Investigate Death of Student on Campus
URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — University of Illinois Police are currently conducting a death investigation following the discovery of a deceased student on campus early Saturday morning.
The student has been identified as 18-year-old Akul B. Dhawan. Authorities from the Champaign County Coroner’s Office and University Police have stated that no foul play is suspected at this time, and the incident is being treated as an accident.
According to police officials, Dhawan’s roommate reported him missing at 1:23 a.m. on Saturday. The roommate informed officers that he had not seen Dhawan for approximately an hour and was unable to reach him by phone.

A search was initiated by officers in the vicinity where Dhawan was last seen, including his residence hall and the probable route between those two locations, which encompasses the main Quad and campus streets. Local hospitals were also contacted, and attempts were made to reach Dhawan by phone, but no further information regarding his whereabouts could be obtained.
At 11:08 a.m., Dhawan was discovered deceased by a university employee on the back porch of a building located at Nevada Street and Goodwin Avenue.
The University of Illinois Police Department is currently conducting an ongoing investigation, and officials have mentioned that the classification of Dhawan’s death as “accidental” may be subject to change as new information is gathered.
