A man was taken into custody for allegedly driving under the influence and causing a wrong-way crash that resulted in serious injuries to a 20-year-old in Swansea, Massachusetts. The incident occurred on Thursday night and the driver, identified as Timothy Couturier, 53, is now facing multiple charges including operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation, and state highway wrong way.

According to the investigation conducted by the police, Couturier was driving in the northbound lanes of the southbound direction when his vehicle collided head-on with another car. Authorities strongly suspect that Couturier was intoxicated at the time of the crash.

Emergency responders had to employ hydraulic tools to free Couturier from his car before rushing him to a local hospital. He was arraigned from his hospital bed on Friday, as reported by WJAR, a Boston affiliate of NBC10.

The other driver involved in the incident, Tristan Tucker from Swansea, was pulled from his burning vehicle and immediately transported to Rhode Island Hospital. Tucker, a student at MTTI, is currently in an induced coma, suffering from a brain bleed and multiple broken bones, according to his family’s statement on an online fundraiser page.

Friends of Tucker revealed that the collision occurred during his work break last Thursday night. Tucker had been employed at Five Guys for approximately six months, and his co-workers describe him as a joyful individual who brought positivity to the workplace.

Expressing their support for Tucker, his co-workers initiated a fundraising effort by donating all their tips from the past few days to him and his family. A tip jar with the words “For Tristan” was placed on the counter at the restaurant. Austin Kehoe, Tucker’s colleague, shared with WJAR that the Five Guys staff considers themselves a family and are always ready to support each other in times of need.

The response from customers has been overwhelming, with the fundraiser generating around $4,000 by Sunday, the final day of the campaign. Kehoe expressed gratitude for the community of Swansea, describing them as amazing for rallying around and providing assistance to the town’s young residents during difficult times.

It is crucial to prioritize road safety and raise awareness about the dangers of driving under the influence. Incidents like this serve as a reminder of the severe consequences that can result from such irresponsible behavior. Let us all work together to create a safer environment on our roads.
