CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – An incident involving a suspicious person at a Walgreens in West Ashley has resulted in an officer-involved shooting, as reported by state police.

According to Charleston Police Department (CPD) Chief Chito Walker, an officer responded to a call for service at 1115 Old Towne Road, which was linked to an ongoing investigation. Upon arrival, the officer encountered the suspect, leading to a foot chase.

During the pursuit, gunfire was exchanged between the officer and the suspect. Fortunately, the officer was not shot, but sustained an injury to his hand, requiring medical attention. The officer has since been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, confirmed Sgt. Anthony Gibson, a department spokesman.

The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Christopher Leon Hampton, was apprehended near 1205 Ashley River Road without further incident. Both the officer and Hampton suffered injuries during the confrontation.
