BALTIMORE — Tragedy struck South Baltimore over the weekend as two individuals lost their lives in a shooting incident. The identities of the victims have been revealed, with one of them being a beloved mother and grandmother. As investigations continue, the police are still searching for the shooter.

Fear and Deteriorating Safety in Curtis Bay

A stroll along the corner of Hazel Street and Pennington Avenue in Curtis Bay reveals a worrisome sight. Bullet holes outside a local bar and scattered police business cards on the sidewalk serve as reminders of the recent violence. The atmosphere has made some residents hesitant to venture out.

Felix Tandazo, a resident of the area, expressed his concerns for personal safety, saying, “It’s a little dangerous, I try not to come out much. I do hear shootings over here and there. It happens every week or so. I actually woke up one morning at five and I heard some gunshots going off.” To ensure his safety, Tandazo decided to adopt a dog.

Tragic Incident on Pennington Avenue

On Friday night, tragedy struck the 4300 block of Pennington Avenue, as two individuals fell victim to a fatal shooting. Among the victims was Mary Schuman, a 60-year-old woman who was heading to a local bar to purchase a six pack of beer. Unfortunately, she found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time.

According to her grieving family, who chose to remain anonymous, Schuman’s untimely demise has left them devastated. The family shared that she was a loving mother and grandmother, leaving behind four children and five grandchildren. They are now faced with the burden of funeral expenses and have set up a GoFundMe page to seek assistance.

Community in Fear

Stephen Salerno, a resident living just a block away from the shooting, recalled the horrifying incident. “I was on my porch, so I heard the shots rang out. There was a lot of people out and when the shots rang out it was multiple gunshots, it was a spray of fire. There was actually a lot of screaming and pandemonium, it was pretty bad,” Salerno said.

Salerno, who personally knew the unidentified victim, now fears for the safety of his own child. “I just had a one-year-old child, so it’s like when I see little Stevie it’s like I don’t know how I can protect her from everything,” he expressed with concern.

The incident occurred in close proximity to a memorial site for Baltimore Police Officer Keona Holley, who tragically lost her life in 2021 after being shot while on duty. This serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing violence in the area.

Seeking an End to the Violence

Residents of the community are deeply troubled by the recurring violence and question when it will come to an end. Tandazo emphasized the need for caution, saying, “You just got to be careful around here, eyes behind your back.”

The local community has rallied behind Schuman’s family during this difficult time. The GoFundMe page set up by her daughter aims to alleviate the financial burden associated with the funeral expenses. Schuman’s loved ones hope that this tragic incident will serve as a wake-up call to address the rising violence in South Baltimore.
