Estranged Husband Accused of Murder Found in Costa Rica After 30 Years on the Run

An estranged husband who had been on the run for more than three decades after being accused of stabbing his wife to death in 1991 has finally been apprehended in Costa Rica, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

The Tragic Incident

The incident dates back to April 30, 1991, when Ana Jurado, a 24-year-old woman, was found with fatal stab wounds at her home. The main suspect in the case was identified as her husband, 24-year-old Jose Lazaro Cruz. However, before the authorities could arrest him, Lazaro Cruz managed to flee to El Salvador.

The Ongoing Investigation

Fairfax County detectives, determined to bring the alleged murderer to justice, traveled to El Salvador in 1999. During their trip, they gathered crucial information about Lazaro Cruz’s whereabouts. Although their efforts were meticulous, they were unable to capture him at that time.

The search for Lazaro Cruz continued for more than two decades, with the hope of closing the case and providing closure to Ana Jurado’s family.

The Arrest in Costa Rica

In a shocking turn of events, in 2022, the Department of Justice received information that Lazaro Cruz had been arrested while attempting to cross from Nicaragua into Costa Rica. Thanks to an extradition treaty between Costa Rica and the United States, Lazaro Cruz was brought back to the U.S. on January 18.

The assistance of federal authorities was crucial in facilitating the process, which took approximately a year and a half.

Justice Finally Served

Now back in the U.S., Lazaro Cruz will face charges in Fairfax County, part of the Washington, D.C., suburban area. His extradition marks a significant step towards justice for Ana Jurado and her family, who have waited patiently for over three decades.
