Lockport, UK – In a significant development, Thomas L. McDowell, a 20-year-old resident of Lockport, has pleaded guilty to assault charges in a shooting incident that took place on February 5 at Woodlands Mobile Home Park. Initially, McDowell was charged with attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon, burglary, and assault. However, by pleading guilty to the assault charge, McDowell now faces a sentence equivalent to that of an attempted murder charge. Niagara County District Attorney Brian Seaman believes that this allows the judge to determine an appropriate sentence for the gravity of McDowell’s violent conduct.

McDowell was apprehended shortly after the shooting incident when staff at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center alerted the police about him seeking treatment for a stab wound. The medical center staff also identified him as the shooting suspect. Following treatment for his wound at Erie County Medical Center, McDowell was taken into custody.

According to McDowell’s attorney, Robert Fogg, the stabbing incident occurred during the same altercation in which McDowell shot the 38-year-old victim. However, the accounts of all parties involved differ on whether McDowell shot before or after being stabbed. Police confirm that McDowell’s victim sustained two non-lethal gunshot wounds and received appropriate medical attention.

Sentencing for McDowell has been scheduled for April 8. The guilty plea and the subsequent sentencing will play a crucial role in determining the consequences for McDowell’s actions, as well as the message it sends to the community regarding the severity of such violent incidents.
