Man Arrested After Hit-and-Run Incident and Fiery Chase in Pocahontas County, Iowa

POCAHONTAS, Iowa (KTIV) – In a dramatic turn of events, two law enforcement vehicles were struck, leading to a high-speed chase and a pickup truck catching fire on Friday in Pocahontas County, Iowa.

On January 19, the Iowa State Patrol (ISP) was providing assistance to the Laurens Police Department following a fatal single-vehicle crash near the intersection of East and Allen Streets in Laurens. During the course of their response, an unrelated pickup truck collided with an ISP vehicle and a Laurens PD vehicle.

Authorities have confirmed that the pickup truck involved in the collision was not connected to the fatal crash earlier. The pickup truck quickly fled the scene, but it was later discovered in the parking lot of Casey’s in Laurens, according to court documents.

Law enforcement officers tried to apprehend the suspect, but the pickup truck drove recklessly out of the parking lot, leading to a high-speed pursuit on Highway 10 in Pocahontas County.

Eventually, the Pocahontas Police Department successfully deployed stop sticks on Highway 10, causing the pickup truck to come to a halt in the middle of the road. The driver, identified as 35-year-old Ricky Burnett from Spencer, Iowa, continued to rev his engine until the pickup truck caught fire.

Despite the vehicle being engulfed in flames, Burnett attempted to flee on foot. However, law enforcement officers swiftly apprehended him. Burnett now faces multiple charges, including leaving the scene of an accident, eluding law enforcement for the second time, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, and failure to provide proof of insurance.
