Tragic Plane Crash Claims Lives of Venture Capitalist, MIT Alums, and Zoom Executive’s Son
Introduction
A small single-engine plane crashed on Sunday in California, resulting in the unfortunate loss of four lives. The victims included a venture capitalist, alumni from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the son of a high-ranking executive at Zoom.

The Fatal Incident
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, a witness reported the plane’s erratic flying near Half Moon Bay, prompting them to call 911. The aircraft involved was a Cozy Mark IV, a four-seat light plane assembled from a kit. On board were Isaac Zimmern, his girlfriend Emma Wilmer-Shiles, Lochie Ferrier, and his fiancée Cassidy Petit, all aged 27.
Tragically, all four individuals lost their lives in the crash, though only Wilmer-Shiles’ body has been recovered so far. Authorities reported that the plane crashed approximately 25 miles south of San Francisco, landing upside down.
An Eyewitness Account
A witness, who had been dining at the Moss Beach Distillery, recounted the moments leading up to the crash. She shared her experience of hearing the engine losing power, reminiscent of scenes from movies where a plane is about to crash. Looking up, she saw the plane hovering dangerously close to the restaurant before the tragic incident occurred.
The Victims
Isaac Zimmern, the son of Johann Zimmern, an education marketing lead at Zoom, was one of the victims. Johann Zimmern’s LinkedIn profile revealed his role at the global communications company, emphasizing the devastating loss suffered by the Zoom executive and his family.

Emma Wilmer-Shiles, who had graduated from MIT in 2018, was also aboard the ill-fated plane. Her LinkedIn profile showcased her academic achievements and indicated her connection to the prestigious institution.
Lochie Ferrier, another MIT alumnus, had recently completed his bachelor’s degree in aerospace, aeronautical, and astronautical engineering. Furthermore, his LinkedIn profile revealed that he had undertaken additional training at the National Test Pilot School in California, highlighting his passion for aviation.
Cassidy Petit, Ferrier’s fiancée, worked as a venture capitalist at RH Capital. Her expertise lay in investing in startups focused on women’s health and health equity, as mentioned on her LinkedIn profile.
