DeLand, Florida – A shocking incident has taken place in DeLand, as 46-year-old therapist Travis McBride was arrested by the DeLand Police on January 18 for the murder of a homeless man. McBride is now in custody without bond at the Volusia County Branch Jail.

According to WESH, the arrest was made after the lifeless body of a man believed to be homeless was discovered in the trunk of McBride’s car on Thursday morning. The victim has been identified as 51-year-old Clinton Dorsey, and McBride has been charged with premeditated first-degree murder in connection with his death.
The incident occurred on the night of January 17, when McBride allegedly shot Dorsey. The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, as reported by WESH.
The charging affidavit for McBride reveals that Dorsey’s body was found in the trunk of a red hatchback registered to the therapist. The vehicle was parked at 620 E. New York Ave., which is where McBride’s counseling practice, Starting Point Mental Health LLC, is located.
According to the affidavit, several anonymous 911 calls were received around 7 a.m. on January 18, leading to an immediate investigation. Transcriptions of these calls indicated that a murder had occurred around 11:30 p.m. on January 17, with a white male named “Travis” identified as the perpetrator.

News Journal reports that swift police action led to the identification of a female witness, who remains publicly unidentified. The witness revealed that McBride believed Dorsey had put glass in a jar intended for his dogs, which prompted his search for Dorsey.
The witness described McBride’s statement, saying, “Because Clinton put glass in a jar for his dogs, and he was done with it.” She went on to recount how the confrontation between McBride and Dorsey escalated later that night. The two stood on opposite sides of Frankfort Avenue and engaged in a heated argument. McBride then allegedly shot Dorsey multiple times.
The witness further informed investigators that McBride crossed the street, fired additional rounds at close range, and then dragged Dorsey’s lifeless body westbound across the roadway and out of view.
Authorities found spent 9-millimeter rounds at two key locations related to the incidents in DeLand. The rounds were discovered at the scene on Frankfort Avenue and in a nearby trash can within the parking lot at 620 E. New York Ave., where McBride’s vehicle and Dorsey’s body were found.
On January 19, McBride made his first court appearance, where state prosecutors requested no bond, citing strong evidence against him. McBride’s attorney, Michael Gray Moore, agreed to address the question of bond at a later date. McBride is currently facing premeditated first-degree murder charges and remains confined at the Volusia County Jail.
According to Beacon Online News, Travis McBride’s father, Cmdr. Francis “Mac” McBride, a retired DeLand Police Department veteran, has yet to respond to requests for comment.
Travis McBride has worked as a mental health counselor or therapist for over 15 years, according to his website. Court records indicate that he has faced prior charges in domestic violence cases, with the most recent charge being a misdemeanor in 2018, as reported by Beacon Online News.
