Sunday marks the one-year anniversary of a devastating incident that shook the community of Monterey Park. On this day last year, a gunman opened fire at a Lunar New Year celebration at the Star Ballroom, leaving 11 people dead and nine others injured. The incident sent shockwaves throughout the city and left the community in mourning.

Among the victims was Kevin Leung, a beloved Kung Fu instructor at Star Ballroom. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Leung had the difficult task of explaining the heartbreaking event to his young students. However, with the support of their families and the community, the students have been able to heal and move forward.
Reflecting on the past year, Leung expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support. “We’ve been very fortunate to have a lot of support from the families and also the different members of the community,” Leung shared in an interview with KTLA 5’s Annie Rose Ramos. “We actually were taken in by some of them [who gave] us a home, and it helped us have that conversation and help [the students] feel safe, and that was really important.”
Despite the progress made in healing, Star Ballroom has remained closed since the massacre. Leung believes that the location holds a sensitive spot for many Asian individuals, making it difficult for them to return. “Even though they had the Buddhist ceremony to let the dead move on, [people] look at this place and still feel that little sense of uneasiness, and I think that still weighs heavily on people’s minds,” Leung explained.
The tragedy unfolded when 72-year-old Hemet resident Huu Can Tran entered the Lai Lai Ballroom in nearby Alhambra armed with a semi-automatic pistol. Tran’s intentions were clear, as he carried an extended large capacity magazine with the aim of causing maximum harm. However, thanks to the heroic actions of 26-year-old Brandon Tsay, who disarmed Tran upon his entrance, countless lives were saved.

Following a tense standoff with law enforcement, Tran ultimately died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident left the community in shock and disbelief, but it also highlighted the bravery and resilience of individuals like Tsay.
As the anniversary of this tragic event approaches, the community of Monterey Park continues to mourn the lives lost and support those affected. The wounds may still be fresh, but the strength and unity of the community have shown that healing is possible. While Star Ballroom may remain closed for now, the memory of the victims and the spirit of resilience will forever be etched in the hearts of the community.
