On January 21st, at approximately 10:22 p.m., the Monterey Park police dispatch received a harrowing 911 call reporting shots fired. The witness recalled that the incident occurred merely two minutes prior, sending shockwaves through the peaceful community.

An unimaginable tragedy unfolded at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio on Garvey Avenue at around 10:20 p.m. A gunman, later identified as 72-year-old Hemet resident Huu Can Tran, entered the studio and mercilessly opened fire. The horrifying attack claimed the lives of 11 innocent individuals, leaving several others wounded and forever traumatized.

Within a span of minutes, the gunman proceeded to Lai Lai Dance Studio in Alhambra. However, bravery emerged in the face of terror as Brandon Tsay confronted Tran in the studio’s lobby. Engaged in a courageous struggle, Tsay managed to disarm the assailant, forcing Tran to flee the scene.

The following morning, on January 22nd, Torrance police initiated patrols after receiving reports of a suspicious white van. At approximately 9 a.m., officers spotted the van on Hawthorne Boulevard, only to discover that the license plates did not match DMV records. As they approached the vehicle for a routine traffic stop, a single gunshot echoed, prompting the officers to retreat and call for reinforcements.

A tense standoff ensued as law enforcement authorities surrounded the van, later revealed to be Tran’s. Tragically, the ordeal concluded with Tran taking his own life, leaving a community devastated and searching for answers.

In light of this heart-wrenching incident, Monterey Park officials took swift action to support survivors and families of the victims. A dedicated resource center was established to provide crucial assistance and solace to those affected by the tragedy.

News of the massacre sent shockwaves throughout the nation, with L.A. County Sheriff Robert Luna announcing that a staggering 42 rounds were fired during the attack. Despite extensive investigations, authorities struggled to uncover a clear motive behind this senseless act of violence.

Sadly, it stood as the deadliest mass shooting since the tragic events in Uvalde, Texas, in May 2022, where a gunman claimed the lives of 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School.
