The Winston-Salem Police Department has confirmed that a fatal officer-involved shooting took place on Saturday night, resulting in the death of one man. The incident occurred in the 2000 block of Teresa Avenue, following a larceny call for service.

According to the authorities, law enforcement was dispatched to the scene at approximately 3:26 p.m. Upon arrival, officers were informed that 33-year-old Shane William Sims, a resident of the 2000 block of Teresa Avenue, had stolen property from a neighbor.

Police officers proceeded to approach Sims’ residence to initiate a conversation with him regarding the alleged theft. However, the situation quickly escalated when Sims issued a threat, stating that he would harm the officers involved.

As the investigation progressed, it was discovered that Sims had additional outstanding arrest warrants related to unrelated incidents. Coupled with the threats made against the officers and the knowledge of firearms present within the residence, the Winston-Salem Police Department made the decision to request the assistance of the SWAT team.

At approximately 5:54 p.m., the WSPD officer discharged their firearm, striking Sims. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) immediately administered aid at the scene; however, despite their efforts, Sims succumbed to his injuries. Fortunately, no officers were harmed during the incident.

The State Bureau of Investigation has been assigned to conduct an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting, ensuring a transparent and impartial review of the circumstances.
