Indiana State Trooper Struck by Vehicle on Indianapolis Interstate

INDIANAPOLIS (WNDU) – An Indiana State Police trooper is currently in serious but stable condition after being hit by a vehicle on an Indianapolis interstate.

The incident took place on Saturday night on I-65, shortly after Trooper Azariah Keith had assisted a stranded motorist in changing a flat tire. As Keith was loading his tire-changing equipment back into his patrol car, a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox swerved around another trooper who had been blocking the left lane to provide a safe space for Keith’s assistance. Unfortunately, the driver lost control of the vehicle, crashing into a concrete median barrier and ultimately striking both Keith and his police car.

Due to the impact, Trooper Keith sustained critical injuries and was immediately transported to the hospital. According to our sister station, WTHR, the 22-year-old trooper is expected to survive. ISP Sgt. John Perrine has confirmed that Keith is awake, alert, and is currently in contact with his family.

The driver of the Equinox, identified as 22-year-old Armaandeep Singh from Indianapolis, has been arrested on preliminary charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury. WTHR reports that Singh allegedly had a blood alcohol concentration level of 0.16, which is twice the legal limit.

Indiana State Police have stated that the southbound lanes of I-65 were closed for nearly three hours as authorities processed the scene of the accident.
