The distressing episode unfolded in November 2023 when a deepfake video emerged and quickly gained traction on various social media platforms. The manipulated video cleverly superimposed the face of British-Indian influencer Zara Patel onto Rashmika Mandanna’s body, portraying her in workout attire. This incident sparked a broader conversation about the unethical use of deepfake technology, leading influential figures to voice their concerns about the potential consequences of such content.
After an extensive investigation, the Delhi Police revealed the arrest of a 23-year-old B-Tech graduate from Andhra Pradesh in connection with the case. Eemani Naveen, a resident of Guntur, reportedly created the deepfake video to boost followers on his Rashmika Mandanna fan page on Instagram.

The accused utilized advanced artificial intelligence (AI) techniques and resources from YouTube to create the deepfake video with alarming accuracy. Within just two weeks, the video significantly increased the number of followers on his Instagram page from 90,000 to an astonishing 108,000.
Legal proceedings were initiated following a complaint filed by the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), resulting in the registration of a case under sections 465 and 469 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Additionally, sections 66C and 66E of the Information Technology Act were invoked, highlighting the seriousness.
