Popular actor Rashmika Mandanna has expressed her heartfelt gratitude towards the Delhi Police for apprehending a B-Tech graduate from Andhra Pradesh who was responsible for creating and circulating a deepfake video featuring the “Animal” star on social media.

The video, which went viral in November, depicted a woman wearing a black workout onesie entering an elevator.

The accused, identified as 23-year-old Eemani Naveen from Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, had utilized artificial intelligence (AI) to morph the face of British-Indian social media personality Zara Patel, making her resemble the actor in the video.

Mandanna took to her official X page on Saturday to share a note, expressing her gratitude and tagging the handle of Delhi Police’s Cyber Crime Unit.

“Expressing my heartfelt gratitude to @DCP_IFSO. Thank you for apprehending those responsible. Feeling truly grateful for the community that embraces me with love, support, and shields me,” wrote the 27-year-old actor.

In her post, Mandanna also emphasized the importance of consent and solidarity, stating, “Girls and boys – if your image is used or morphed anywhere without your consent, it is wrong! I hope this serves as a reminder that you are surrounded by people who will support you, and appropriate action will be taken!”

According to an official, the accused had created the deepfake video in an attempt to increase the followers on his fan page dedicated to Mandanna on Instagram.

Deepfake refers to a digital technique that employs AI technology to convincingly replace one person’s likeness with another.

On November 10, the Delhi Police’s Special Cell registered an FIR (First Information Report) under sections 465 (punishment for forgery) and 469 (forgery for the purpose of harming reputation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), as well as sections 66C and 66E of the Information Technology Act, following a complaint by the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW).

When the deepfake video went viral on social media, Mandanna received support from her colleagues, including Amitabh Bachchan, Mrunal Thakur, and Naga Chaitanya.
