New Delhi, January 20 (MENAFN – IANS) – A tragic incident unfolded in Delhi as a 39-year-old physically challenged woman lost her life after being hit by a speeding truck. The accused driver was apprehended by the authorities after an extensive search operation conducted across the city.

The Geeta Colony police station received a distress call from the police control room on Thursday, reporting an accident involving a woman and an unidentified vehicle near Shamshan Ghat in Geeta Colony.

“The injured woman was immediately rushed to SDN hospital by a PCR van, where she was unfortunately declared brought dead,” stated Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Surendra Choudhary.

Based on the available CCTV footage near the accident spot, the police investigation revealed that the victim was crossing the road in a sitting posture, possibly due to her physical disability. The footage also showed a green dumper truck running over her.

“Our team physically checked the parking lots of all the trucks hired by Gowar Construction Company at Shastri Park and Akshardham. Additionally, we examined around 150 CCTV cameras installed on Geeta Colony Flyover, Shakarpur, Laxmi Nagar, Vikas Marg, Akshardham Temple, and Shastri Park,” added the DCP.

During this thorough investigation, the police discovered a significant clue. One of the trucks had a noticeable discrepancy – a front light was not functioning properly, and some digits on the back of the truck were obscured.

“It is worth mentioning that the offending truck was being used for dumping concrete and building materials, and due to its condition, the registration number was not visible from either side,” explained the DCP.

The truck driver, identified as Firoz and hailing from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, was subsequently apprehended. Upon sustained interrogation, Firoz confessed to the mentioned accident.

This tragic incident highlights the importance of road safety and the need for drivers to exercise caution while on the roads. It also serves as a reminder to pedestrians, especially those with physical disabilities, to remain vigilant and use designated pedestrian crossings whenever possible.
