The man facing charges in a drunk driving accident in Fond du Lac in 2023 that resulted in a fatality has pleaded no contest to two charges, according to court records. The accused, identified as 57-year-old Brian Sippel, had initially faced seven felonies, but five charges were dropped. His sentencing is scheduled for June.

Court documents reveal that Brian Sippel is a repeat offender with prior convictions for drunk driving in 2004 and 2017, as described by District Attorney Eric Toney in a news release following the crash.

The fatal crash occurred on January 14, 2023, at the intersection of Highway 151 and Interstate 41 in Fond du Lac. Law enforcement officers arrived at the scene to find two vehicles, a white SUV and a black car, both heavily damaged at the rear, as well as a gray pickup truck located in the nearby grassy area.

Tragically, the driver of the black car, identified as 58-year-old Mike Hoffman from Waukesha, was found unconscious and without a pulse. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, he succumbed to what appeared to be “extreme head trauma.” Another passenger in the black car was found with a large cut to the back of her head, although she was partially alert. Bystanders had already removed her from the wreckage, and she was later treated at a local hospital for multiple injuries, including broken ribs, a collapsed lung, severe head trauma, and lacerations.

Investigations revealed that the front license plate of the pickup truck was discovered inside the black car, indicating that the pickup truck had collided with the black car, subsequently pushing it into the white SUV. One of the passengers in the SUV stated that the pickup truck seemed to have appeared out of nowhere.

At the crash site, Brian Sippel remained in the driver’s seat of the pickup truck and claimed to be unharmed. However, at the hospital, he informed authorities that he “felt like he was hit by a truck.” Sippel, who had finished work around 6:30 p.m., approximately 45 minutes after the crash occurred, exhibited slurred speech and bloodshot eyes. He later admitted to having consumed one drink in St. Cloud but stated that he only recalled leaving the area.
