Dorchester Man Arrested After Wrong-Way Police Chase in Charlton

CHARLTON — A man from Dorchester was arraigned on multiple charges today after leading police on a dangerous wrong-way chase during the early hours of the morning. The pursuit concluded with a police cruiser being struck and an officer sustaining injuries.

Wrong-Way Driver Reported on Worcester Rd

At approximately 1:47 a.m., the Charlton Police Department received a distressing report of a driver traveling in the wrong direction on Worcester Rd, specifically on Route 20 near Old Worcester Rd.

Swift Response from Charlton Police

Responding swiftly to the alarming situation, all three on-duty officers, along with two additional officers who were working a paid detail in the vicinity, rushed to the scene to apprehend the perpetrator.

Refusal to Stop and Evading Officers

The suspect, identified as James Narcisse, a 33-year-old resident of Dorchester, initially refused to comply with the officers’ commands to pull over. Determined to evade capture, Narcisse embarked on a high-speed chase, making his way onto Richardson Corner Rd before abruptly turning back towards Worcester Rd.

Collision with Police Cruiser

As the pursuit intensified, Narcisse finally came to a halt. However, instead of surrendering, he accelerated his vehicle, veered off the road, and collided with a police cruiser, causing significant damage and rendering it inoperable.

End of the Chase and Apprehension

Despite the collision, Narcisse persisted in his attempt to flee, continuing east on Route 20. The Oxford Police Department, recognizing the gravity of the situation, deployed spike strips along the road, effectively deflating the suspect’s tires. The disabled vehicle eventually came to a stop just before reaching Route 56. Narcisse, realizing his predicament, abandoned the car and attempted to escape on foot. However, law enforcement officers swiftly apprehended him.

Arraignment and Charges

Following his arrest, James Narcisse was arraigned in Dudley District Court. He faces a multitude of charges, including assault with a dangerous weapon, malicious destruction of property over $1200, three counts of leaving the scene of a property damage crash, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, and a marked lane violation.

Injured Officer and Gratitude for Assistance

During the incident, one officer sustained minor injuries and was subsequently treated and released. The Charlton Police Department expressed their gratitude to both the Oxford Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police for their invaluable assistance throughout the ordeal.
