Zambia: Woman Sentenced to Two Years for Accidental death of Baby While Drunk

In a tragic incident that shook the community of Mufulira, Zambia, a 28-year-old woman named Christine Musonda has pleaded guilty to causing the death of her one-month-old baby while in a drunken stupor. The shocking development unfolded when Musonda accidentally placed her elbow on her baby’s nose, leading to the infant’s untimely demise.

Musonda, who has now been sentenced to two years of simple imprisonment, admitted to the crime and expressed remorse for her actions. The court identified her as the culprit in the case of manslaughter, which took place in April of the previous year.

According to Musonda’s statement, she left her home around 18:00 hours to consume kachasu, a locally brewed alcoholic beverage. She returned home around 20:00 hours and went to sleep in her bedroom, unaware of the tragic events that would soon unfold.

Later that night, Musonda’s other children heard the baby crying and went to check on him. However, the mother, in her intoxicated state, chased them away. It was only a few minutes later that Musonda was discovered sleeping with her elbow inadvertently resting on the baby’s nose.

After nearly a year, the Ndola High Court Judge, Winnie Mwenda, delivered the judgement. Throughout the proceedings, Musonda remained tearful, which the judge interpreted as a sign of her remorse for the tragedy she caused.

“I therefore sentence her to two years of simple imprisonment, effective from the date of her arrest,” Judge Mwenda announced.

The people of Zambia are hoping that Musonda will serve her sentence, learn from her mistake, and eventually reunite with her children and family. The loss of her child has left her devastated, and she has accepted full responsibility for her role in the tragedy.
