Heroic Actions Prevent Tragedy in Northeast Portland

Majiah Washington, an 18-year-old from Northeast Portland, found herself caught in a life-or-death situation on Wednesday morning. What started as a typical day quickly turned into a harrowing experience when Washington witnessed a power line collapse onto a neighbor’s car and a tree branch fall to the ground.

The scene unfolded as members of a neighboring family were preparing to enter their SUV. Suddenly, a man holding a 9-month-old baby slipped on the icy driveway, accidentally coming into contact with the live wire. A woman rushed to his aid, but she too slipped and made contact with the dangerous power line.

Amidst the chaos, Washington, a former student at Jefferson High School and a day care provider, noticed a teenager dialing 911 near the scene. Tragically, this brave teenager, identified as Ta’Ron Briggs, lost his life in the accident.

However, Washington’s quick thinking and selflessness saved the day. Spotting the baby moving its head, she knew she had to act swiftly. Braving the treacherous icy conditions, Washington approached the SUV, ignoring the potential danger of electrocution. Her sole focus was rescuing the baby.

With guidance from a 911 operator, Washington carefully swaddled the baby and made her way to safety until firefighters arrived. The baby was promptly transported to a nearby hospital and is reported to be in good health.

Portland Fire & Rescue spokesperson Rick Graves expressed gratitude for Washington’s heroic actions, stating that she later humbly remarked, “I just did what any sane person would do.”

Firefighters were alerted to the incident just before 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday. Upon arrival, they discovered the three family members lying on the ground, approximately 35 feet away from the SUV. The power line was entangled with the vehicle, pinned down by a large tree branch.

Contrary to initial reports, the rescued child is actually 9 months old, not 2 years old as previously stated.

Graves emphasized the importance of avoiding downed power lines and urged individuals to remain inside their vehicles if a power line falls onto their car. Only if there is an “imminent danger” should occupants consider exiting the vehicle. The rubber tires provide insulation and protection.

This incident occurred amidst an ice storm that has wreaked havoc in Oregon, claiming the lives of at least 12 people in the Portland area. Falling trees caused two fatalities, while another two deaths resulted from a church fire that may have been fueled by a generator. Additionally, Multnomah County has reported four suspected hypothermia deaths, with Washington County currently investigating another possible hypothermia-related fatality.

Unfortunately, the weather forecast predicts further freezing rain for the Portland area on Thursday, prolonging these challenging conditions.

Despite the tragic circumstances, Majiah Washington’s heroic actions serve as a shining example of bravery and selflessness. In a world full of uncertainty, her quick thinking and unwavering determination saved a life, reminding us all of the power of human compassion in the face of adversity.
