COLOMBO (News 1st) – The Police officer involved in the shooting incident in Dampalassa, Narammala has been deemed to have acted recklessly, according to Police Spokesman Senior Superintendent of Police Attorney Nihal Thalduwa. He further stated that the officer’s actions were in direct violation of the directives issued for Police officers.

In response to the tragic death of a lorry driver during an encounter with the Police on Thursday (18), a special investigation unit has been deployed to Narammala. The incident, which involved the accidental discharge of a firearm carried by a Sub-Inspector, has raised concerns among the public.

Acting Inspector General of Police, Deshabandu Tennakoon, has confirmed the appointment of an investigation team led by an Assistant Superintendent of Police. The team immediately visited the scene late on Thursday (18) night. Assuring swift action, Tennakoon stated, “Following a thorough investigation, stern action will be taken against those responsible.”

The incident unfolded when two plainclothes Police officers in Narammala attempted to pull over a small lorry. However, the driver reportedly ignored their instructions, leading the officers to pursue him on a motorcycle.

The chase eventually came to an end in Dampalassa, where the lorry was finally stopped. While inspecting the vehicle, the Sub-Inspector’s firearm accidentally discharged, striking and fatally injuring the 40-year-old driver, who was identified as a resident of Alawwa, according to Police Spokesman SSP and Attorney-At-Law Nihal Thalduwa.

The Sub-Inspector has been arrested and is currently detained pending further investigation. The news of the driver’s death sparked protests outside the Narammala Police Station, which required the intervention of the Police Special Task Force to restore order.

The body of the 40-year-old resident of Alawwa, who succumbed to gunshot wounds, has been placed at the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
