Search warrant documents have recently been released, shedding light on the tragic shooting incident that occurred earlier this month at a motel in Cloquet, leaving three people dead. Although these documents do not provide any insights into the possible motive behind the shooting, they do offer crucial information regarding the investigation.

New Evidence Uncovered

According to the warrants, law enforcement authorities sought approval to examine a cell phone believed to belong to the shooting suspect, 32-year-old Nicholas Elliot Lenius of Ramsey. Additionally, they aimed to investigate a camera found inside a vehicle that Lenius was thought to have been driving at the time of the incident.

Investigators have discovered that Lenius had been communicating with an individual identified as his supervisor throughout the incident. It remains unclear from the documents what specific role this supervisor played in Lenius’s life and the nature of their conversation.

Moreover, these warrants reveal that Lenius sent a message to his supervisor during the tragedy, stating, “[expletive] is going on.” The supervisor confirmed this communication and informed investigators that he had spoken with Lenius over the phone while Lenius was captured on surveillance video talking on his mobile device during the incident.

The Tragic Event

The shooting took place at the Super 8 motel in Cloquet on the evening of January 8th. Upon arrival, law enforcement officers discovered the lifeless body of a 22-year-old motel employee, Shellby Marie Trettel, inside the building. Trettel had suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

Furthermore, authorities found a second victim, 35-year-old Patrick Jeffery Roers of Deer River, in a vehicle located in the motel’s parking lot. Roers had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

Lenius, the suspected shooter, was found outside the motel with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. A weapon was also discovered near his body, further supporting the hypothesis that he was responsible for the tragic event.

Prior Convictions and Suspected Connection

A search through Minnesota court records revealed that Lenius had a previous conviction in 2014 for driving under the influence. Additionally, he had two other misdemeanor convictions related to traffic offenses. However, it is currently unclear whether the suspect had any prior connection or acquaintance with the victims.

Cloquet Police Chief Derek Randall previously stated that investigators believe both Lenius and Roers were guests at the Super 8 motel. However, the exact nature of their relationship, if any, remains under investigation.

Funeral Services Held

The Cloquet community mourned the loss of Shellby Marie Trettel and Patrick Jeffery Roers earlier this week as their funeral services were held to honor their lives.

As this investigation continues, authorities are committed to uncovering the truth behind this tragic shooting incident that shook the community of Cloquet.
