Nakina Boyer’s Father Urges OPP to Issue Amber Alert for Missing Daughter; Mother Identified as Jeanette Niganobe, Previously Convicted in 2006 Impaired Driving Death of Sault Police Constable

The father of five-year-old Nakina Boyer, who disappeared from Mississauga First Nation along with her mother Jeanette Niganobe five days ago, is expressing his frustration over the Ontario Provincial Police’s (OPP) decision not to issue an Amber Alert.

Fred Robinson, a resident of Batchewana First Nation, claims that his ex-partner fled the community after he was awarded custody of Boyer in family court on the day they went missing.

Robinson reached out to SooToday after the OPP declined his request to classify the disappearance as an abduction in a news release earlier this week.

According to Robinson, the scheduled appointment mentioned in the OPP’s news release was actually an attempt by police and a child welfare worker to bring Boyer into her father’s care following the court’s decision. However, upon arrival, they found only footprints and tracks leading to the end of the driveway, suggesting that the mother and daughter had left.

Despite Robinson’s claims, the OPP stated that two criteria necessary for triggering an Amber Alert were not met in this case: they did not believe Boyer was abducted or in danger. The police believe that the mother is still caring for the child, which is why they did not activate an Amber Alert.

Not much information is being released by the OPP to protect the integrity of the investigation. However, it has been confirmed that Boyer’s mother is Jeanette Niganobe, who was previously convicted in 2008 for impaired driving causing the death of Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Constable Donald Doucet in a collision that occurred in May 2006.

Robinson claims that he hasn’t seen his daughter since March 2023, when Niganobe started defying a court order allowing him to visit his daughter every other weekend. In July 2023, Robinson successfully sued Niganobe for making false and defamatory statements about him on social media, resulting in him being awarded $75,000 in damages.

Following Boyer’s disappearance, Robinson traveled to Toronto, believing that Niganobe had fled there. He has been staying in a hotel room, hoping for any information that could lead to the safe return of his daughter.

The investigation into Boyer’s disappearance involves multiple police agencies, including the Toronto Police Service.

Description of Nakina Boyer and Jeanette Niganobe

Nakina Boyer is described as an Indigenous girl, standing at four feet tall and weighing 80 lbs. She has a heavy build, brown eyes, and straight light brown hair.

Jeanette Niganobe, also Indigenous, is approximately 5-foot-3 in height and weighs around 145 lbs. She has a medium build, brown eyes, and long brown hair. Niganobe has connections to Batchewana First Nation, Sault Ste. Marie, Garden River First Nation, and Toronto. She may be using the last name McCoy.

Robinson still doesn’t understand why the police are not publicly acknowledging that his daughter has been abducted by Niganobe. He claims that the police have informed him that Niganobe will be charged with abduction but are hesitant to publicize this information.
