The death toll from the devastating landslide in Monkayo, Davao de Oro has tragically increased to 10, as another body was recovered on Friday afternoon, according to the municipal government.

In a Facebook post, the Monkayo government announced that the victim, Elvira Saldua, was recovered at 1:31 p.m., adding to the growing list of casualties.

Earlier in the day, the bodies of Ritchell Reboldad and Agnes Bitoon were also found, bringing the total number of fatalities to 10.

The victims have been identified as Catherine Gumatin (27 years old), Hannah Gumatin (9), Dysna Gumatin (3), Arjay Gumatin (1), Cristelle Gumatin (10), Ailee Gumatin (8), Marjomie Nenaria (33), Ritchell Reboldad (35), Agnes Bitoon (44), and Elvira Saldua (35).

Despite the ongoing search, rescue, and retrieval operation, one more person remains missing from the landslide. Rommel Gumatin, 45, has yet to be located as authorities continue their efforts.

In addition to the fatalities, one-year-old Amara Kate Delola sustained injuries and was promptly taken to the hospital for treatment.

The victims were gathered for a prayer worship at a home in Purok 19, Pagasa, Barangay Mt. Diwata, when tragedy struck and they were buried beneath the landslide.

Fe Maestre, the chief of Davao de Oro’s public information office, disclosed that a staggering 73 flooding and landslide incidents were recorded in the province.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported that a total of 270,206 individuals, belonging to 70,862 families, were affected by the severe weather conditions caused by a shear line in the Davao Region.

Out of the affected population, approximately 36,000 people were displaced from their homes. Of these, 14,921 individuals (4,217 families) sought shelter in evacuation centers, while 21,870 others (5,767 families) found refuge elsewhere.

This tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the devastating impact natural disasters can have on communities.

The local authorities, together with various rescue teams, are working tirelessly to provide aid and support to those affected by the landslide and to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents in the region.

As the search for Rommel Gumatin continues, the community remains hopeful that he will be found alive and reunited with his loved ones.
