A man has been charged with murder in Salt Lake City, Utah, after allegedly killing his co-worker at a storage facility. The suspect, Nathan David Evans, reportedly told someone in his vehicle that he planned to “kill someone by bashing his head in because the person had messed with his stuff.”

The incident unfolded on December 29th when a driver overheard Evans making the disturbing statement. Later that evening, another co-worker left the workplace, leaving Evans and the victim, David Hinkebein, alone at the storage facility.

Upon returning to work on January 1, 2024, the co-worker noticed that Hinkebein was missing. Disturbingly, there were bloody handprints on the wall and a blood-stained carpet in a back office. When the co-worker confronted Evans about the mess, he was met with resistance.

Despite the co-worker’s persistence inquiring about Hinkebein’s whereabouts, Evans simply stated that “Hinkebein was done.” This led the co-worker to report the situation to the authorities, suspecting that Hinkebein may have been killed.

Following the report, police conducted a welfare check on January 3, discovering a significant amount of blood and Hinkebein’s lifeless body at the warehouse. The investigation took a grim turn when a hammer with blood and hair matching Evans’ was found next to a minifridge. Additionally, a garbage bag containing clothes worn by Evans was also discovered, covered in blood. An autopsy revealed that Hinkebein had suffered at least 15 blunt force injuries to the head, consistent with a hammer.

As a result of the evidence gathered, Evans has been charged with first-degree felony murder and third-degree felony abuse or desecration of a human body. Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill expressed his determination to prosecute workplace violence to the fullest extent of the law, emphasizing that violence in the workplace is intolerable.

The investigation into Hinkebein’s death is ongoing, and a trial date for Evans has yet to be set. In the meantime, the community mourns Hinkebein’s loss and remembers his dedication to helping those experiencing homelessness in Salt Lake County.
