Officer and Suspects Identified in American Canyon Police Shooting

AMERICAN CANYON, CA — The Napa County Sheriff’s Office has officially identified the police officer and two suspects involved in a recent shooting incident in Vallejo, California. The incident took place last week and has since garnered significant attention.

The Suspects

The suspects have been identified as 18-year-old Demarea Vaughn Rogers III and 18-year-old Jozan Amarion Hill, both residents of Vallejo. The incident began when Rogers and Hill were pursued by an American Canyon police officer after committing a vehicle code violation.

As the chase came to an end near Souza Way and Cronin Drive in Vallejo, both suspects fled on foot, armed with loaded handguns. Officer Joshua Coleman, the American Canyon police officer, repeatedly instructed Rogers to drop the weapons, according to Henry Wofford, the spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.

The Shooting Incident

Rogers, who was seated in the front passenger seat of the car, discarded one of the guns but continued to flee with the other. Officer Coleman, in an effort to protect the public and himself, fired two shots at Rogers, striking him. Immediately after the shooting, Officer Coleman provided medical assistance to Rogers.

Meanwhile, Hill, who was the driver, dropped a loaded .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol as he exited the vehicle. He was swiftly apprehended by law enforcement officers at the scene.

The Weapons Recovered

Upon inspection, it was discovered that Rogers was carrying a .40-caliber ghost gun and an unregistered .40-caliber Glock, which had a high-capacity magazine attached. Hill’s weapon, the .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol, was also found to be loaded.

Suspects’ Charges and Bail

Rogers, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, was officially arraigned from his hospital bed on Thursday. He faces multiple charges, including carrying a loaded unregistered firearm, possession of a high-capacity magazine, possession of a non-serialized handgun, and resisting a peace officer. His bail has been set at $50,000.

Hill, on the other hand, remains in custody at the Napa County Department of Corrections with his bail set at $250,000. He has been arrested on suspicion of several charges, including being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition by a prohibited person, and evading a peace officer. Hill is scheduled to appear for a preliminary court hearing on January 25th at the Napa County Superior Court.

Officer Coleman and Investigation

Officer Joshua Coleman, who has been employed by the Napa County Sheriff’s Office since 2018, has been placed on administrative leave, as is customary in officer-involved shootings. The Napa County Sheriff’s Office provides police services to the City of American Canyon under a contract.

Following standard protocol for officer-involved shootings, the Solano County Major Crimes Task Force has taken charge of the independent investigation. They responded to the scene on the day of the incident and will thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
