Upon reaching the scene, law enforcement officers discovered the lifeless body of a man who had been fatally shot. He was later identified as John Cossel, a 58-year-old resident of Monte Vista.

Kawanna Nelson, a 57-year-old woman from Alamosa, was present at the scene and cooperated with the ensuing investigation, emerging as a person of interest.

According to official documents obtained from the Alamosa Clerk’s office, Nelson and Cossel were close acquaintances who had a brief dispute over Cossel’s request for the keys to his car. Nelson, concerned about his ability to drive, expressed her reservations.

Subsequently, Cossel left Nelson’s apartment.

Nelson, who revealed that she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to a previous violent incident, claimed that Cossel returned to her apartment and began forcefully banging on the door. Despite Nelson’s attempts to ascertain his identity, Cossel failed to provide any clarification.

Feeling alarmed, Nelson decided to open the door while holding her 9 mm Smith and Wesson pistol. As she did so, Cossel allegedly entered her residence and immediately confronted her.

Reacting instinctively, Nelson fired a single shot, unaware that the person she had shot was John Cossel.

Following the incident, Nelson was apprehended and subsequently charged with second-degree homicide. She was then transported to the Alamosa County Detention Center. On Wednesday afternoon, she appeared in court for a hearing to receive advisement on the charges brought against her.
