Hrant Dink’s Life and Legacy

Hrant Dink, a prominent Turkish Armenian journalist, was tragically murdered in Istanbul on 19 January 2007. As the editor of Agos newspaper, he fearlessly spoke and wrote about the Armenian Genocide that occurred in 1915. Dink was widely recognized for his tireless efforts towards reconciliation between Turks and Armenians, advocating for understanding and peace.

The Trial and Controversy

At the time of his untimely death, Dink was facing trial for allegedly violating Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code, which criminalizes “denigrating Turkishness.” This trial had sparked intense debate and criticism both within Turkey and internationally, with many viewing it as an infringement on freedom of speech.

The Assassination

Dink was assassinated in broad daylight at approximately 12:00 GMT as he returned to the offices of Agos. The assailant, who identified himself as an Ankara University student, requested a meeting with Dink. When his request was denied, he waited outside a nearby bank. Eyewitnesses reported that a man aged 25 to 30 approached Dink from behind and fired three shots at point-blank range, tragically ending his life. The assassin, believed to be between 18 and 19 years old, fled the scene on foot.

The Investigation and Identifying the Shooter

In the days following the assassination, the police utilized video footage from the Istanbul MOBESE electronic surveillance network and local security cameras to identify the shooter. The public was called upon to assist with the investigation, and the shooter was soon identified as Ogün Samast, a teenager born in 1990 and registered as residing in Trabzon.

Justice Served

Ogün Samast was convicted of murder and possession of arms by the Heavy Juvenile Criminal Court on 25 July 2011. He received a sentence of 22 years and 10 months in prison. Additionally, Yasin Hayal, an individual involved in a previous bombing incident, was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. Two others were found guilty of assisting Hayal and received sentences of 12 years and 6 months in prison.

Allegations of Involvement

In 2013, a secret witness came forward, disclosing alleged involvement of JITEM (Gendarmerie Intelligence and Counterterrorism) in Dink’s murder. This revelation added another layer of complexity to the case and raised questions about potential hidden agendas.

Arrest Warrants for Police Officers

In a significant development in 2015, arrest warrants were issued for two police officers involved in the investigation. This marked the first instance of public servants being arrested in connection with Dink’s assassination, further underscoring the ongoing search for truth and justice.

Aiding and Abetting Conviction

Ahmet Iskender, convicted of aiding and abetting the murder of Hrant Dink, began serving his sentence after years on the run. Iskender had been found guilty by an Istanbul court in 2012 for disposing of the murder weapon, providing financial assistance to the assassin, and facilitating communication through his telephone. His sentence of twelve and a half years in prison was upheld by the Turkish Court of Cassation in 2013. In 2019, Iskender received an additional two-year prison term for membership in an armed terrorist organization.

Samast’s Release

Shockingly, Ogün Samast, Dink’s murderer, was released on 15 November 2023. Having been caught shortly after the assassination and imprisoned since 2007, Samast’s release raised concerns and sparked outrage. Critics argue that this decision undermines justice and sends a chilling message about the value placed on human life.
